Din Tai Fung Garlic Green Beans

by Kelly
Crunchy Din Tai Fung Garlic Green Beans with garlic sprinkled on top, cooked over a pan with an easy recipe.

This is a super easy dish with just FOUR basic ingredients that I cooked to get my kids to eat greens! With each bite, you’ll experience an irresistible crunch of the crispy exterior that gives way to tender, perfectly cooked green beans!

Din Tai Fung, the renowned Taiwanese restaurant chain known for its delectable soup dumplings (xiao long bao / 小笼包), offers an array of flavours that has captured the hearts of food enthusiasts worldwide, and one such creation is their Garlic Green Beans, a simple yet incredibly flavourful side dish!

At the heart of this dish lies the star ingredient: fresh green beans. These vibrant legumes offer a delightful crunch and a naturally sweet flavour that pairs beautifully with the savoury garlic infusion. Meticulously minced and sautéed to perfection, the garlic imparts a heavenly aroma and a rich, savoury depth to the dish. And for those seeking an extra kick, you can elevate the dish by sprinkling red pepper flakes or chilli powder, to give some subtle yet exciting heat.

To achieve that crispy perfection, the green beans are carefully fried until they are crisp-tender and develop a delightful blistered exterior. This ensures that each green bean retains its freshness while gaining a satisfying crunch, making every bite an absolute delight.

Din Tai Fung’s Garlic Green Beans serve as an ideal accompaniment to a wide range of dishes. Whether you’re savouring their renowned dumplings, indulging in a hearty bowl of noodles, or enjoying a succulent main course, these green beans provide a delightful contrast of textures and flavours that enhance your dining experience. My kids love these green beans precisely because of the crunchiness and simple flavours, and any parent will agree that if a dish can get young toddlers to eat vegetables, that is a dish worth having up your sleeve any time any day! So let’s get to it!

Ingredients

  • 450 g fresh green beans
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • salt to taste
  • vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Rinse the green beans thoroughly and pat them dry with a kitchen towel. Ensure that the ends are trimmed.
Pro Tip: Make sure to pat them dry thoroughly to get rid of excess moisture that can hinder the crisping process.
  • Pour vegetable oil into a deep saucepan until it reaches a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat.
  • Fry the green beans until they are crisp-tender and start to blister. Transfer the fried green beans to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat this process in batches until all the green beans are fried.
Pro Tip: Avoid overcrowding. Fry the green beans in small batches, allowing enough space for them to fry evenly.
  • Drain the oil and sauté the garlic over medium heat until fragrant.
  • Toss in the green beans. Sprinkle salt and mix until they are coated evenly. Serve immediately as a delicious side dish.
  • Optional step: Sprinkle red pepper flakes or chilli powder for some added heat.
