Here’s a tasty steamed chicken dish that we love to eat when we want to feel healthier, with a topping of spring onion oil (aka scallion oil) to give it that extra fragrance and flavour! The kids may choose to skip out on the ginger, but they will definitely love the savoury sauce and tender/flavourful chicken mixed into their rice!
Chinese cuisine, renowned for its emphasis on balance and healthful ingredients, has a history of incorporating ginger into its dishes. Ginger is not only prized for its spicy and aromatic flavor but also for its potential health advantages. It contains bioactive compounds such as gingerol, which are believed to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds may contribute to various health benefits, including aiding digestion, reducing nausea, and even potentially helping with managing inflammatory conditions.
The sauce in Ginger Steamed Chicken is a symphony of tastes. Light soy sauce adds a savory depth, while oyster sauce imparts a rich umami flavor. A pinch of salt, a dash of sugar, and a sprinkle of pepper balance out the taste profile. The corn flour serves as a thickening agent, creating a luscious sauce that coats the chicken pieces, ensuring each bite is a burst of exquisite flavors.
Steaming is a cooking method that has been cherished in Chinese cuisine for its ability to preserve the natural flavors and nutrients of ingredients. It involves cooking food over simmering water, resulting in tender and moist dishes without the need for excessive fats or oils.
The perfect topping for this dish is our very own spring onion oil! Diced spring onions, a touch of salt, and a hint of seasoning and sesame oil are brought to life with sizzling hot cooking oil. This sizzling mixture is then drizzled over the steamed chicken, infusing it with a fragrant aroma and a delightful crunch.
Ginger Steamed Chicken follows this tradition, capitalizing on the healthful aspects of ginger and the benefits of steaming. So let’s get to it!
